The AP headline had me with the word FIRST [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2024-06-01 Panama prepares to evacuate FIRST island in face of rising sea levels . The word first was not capitalized for the AP article but later it is written that “The Gunas of Gardi Sugdub are the first of 63 communities along Panama’s Caribbean and Pacific coasts that government officials and scientists expect to be forced to relocate by rising sea levels in the coming decades.” Gardi Sugdud is on the Caribbean Sea edge of Panama east of Panama City. So far the residents are leaving voluntarily but that will not be for long. This is all so new that the Nuevo Carti site is not even on the maps yet. Clearly, this is not the only of things to come, or even the only right now. Climate catastrophe is already affecting Italy and Mexico and New Zealand in like manner. And the Indigenous people in the Amazon are also in peril right now. And the weather planet wide is deadly. In a good news, bad news aspect though, Panama has a climate change director for the Environmental Ministry. But it is currently predicted that the costs of saving 38,000 Panamanian climate refugees will be around $1.2 billion.
