This Week in the War on Women [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2024-06-01 In Texas, 20 women who’d had dangerous pregnancies (plus two doctors) sued the state of Texas over its draconian anti-abortion law. The details of what they endured are horrifying: One plaintiff, Amanda Zurawski, was hospitalized in Texas when her water broke at 18 weeks of pregnancy, a condition known as premature rupture of membranes, meaning her fetus could not be saved. She was told she could not have an abortion until fetal cardiac activity stopped or her condition became life-threatening. Zurawski developed sepsis within days, which required intensive care and allowed the hospital to induce labor. This week, the Texas Supreme Court ruled against them, claiming the law’s vague exception (that in a doctor's "reasonable medical judgment," the mother has "a life-threatening physical condition that places her at risk of death or serious physical impairment,") is sufficient. In practice, of course, doctors are afraid to err on the side of risking prison. And the law does not even consider the issue of a nonviable fetus. The Texas Republican Party isn’t willing to stop here. Their platform endorses murder charges for abortion which can include the death penalty. As always, this diary is a group effort.
