South Africa: ANC wins plurality, will need to form coalition to stay in power [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2024-06-02 The results are in for the national elections in the Republic of South Africa. The African National Congress has won the largest number of seats, with 159, but for the first time since the end of Apartheid 30 years ago, it has not won a majority in the 400-seat Parliament. The second-place party is the Democratic Alliance, with 87 seats. This is a “pro-business” party with a largely-white base of support. uMkhonto we Sizwe, a new party with a largely-Zulu base, backed by former president Jacob Zuma, won 58, and the leftist Economic Freedom Fighters gained 39. In order to stay in power the ANC will have to make a deal with either or both of MK and EFF. Frankly, I’m fairly happy with these results. 30 years is far too long for one party to rule in a democracy. And the DA had been predicted to do somewhat better than they did. www.reuters.com/...
