[1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2024-06-03 It seems to me that Trump’s conviction for falsifying documents to record payoffs to porn stars as a corporate legal expense and defraud an election also directly proves tax fraud. Accountants and attorneys help us out here! Now that $130,000 in improperly deducted “legal expenses” is now proved, doesn’t that mean he almost certainly underpaid his taxes? Does he need to file an amended income tax return? Is filing a false 2016 or 2017 return still within the statute of limitations? How far back can tax fraud be prosecuted? We know Trump has almost certainly used improper business deductions to reduce his income tax liability to absurdly low amounts, like $750 in 2016 for example. See this link to ProPublica’s recent article, entitled “IRS Audit of Trump Could Cost Former President More Than $100 Million” based on the IRS finding that “Trump effectively claimed the same massive write-off twice on his failed Chicago tower.” That Chicago case seems really complicated. (I applaud ProPublica for digging it out, but it’s too complex to resonate as a campaign issue, I think.) But the falsifying documents conviction seems really simple. If I tried to deduct a personal expense on my corporate tax return, I’d be guilty of tax fraud. Why not Trump? If I were Joe Biden, that would be my first debate point — this guy’s a tax fraud, and no, that doesn’t make him smart. It makes him a cheat and a fraud, and “billionaires” like him not paying their taxes mean we all have to pay more to make it up.
