Fourth Annual Teach the Truth Day of Action June 8, 2024 [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2024-06-03 For the past three summers, teachers rallied across the country to speak out against anti-history education bills. The educator-led events received national media attention, providing a valuable counter narrative to the oversized coverage of the well-funded anti-CRT movement. The right has declared war on teaching the truth about structural racism and sexism and on LGBTQ+ youth. Books by Black, Indigenous, people of color, LGBTQ+, and Palestinian American writers are increasingly being banned. While claiming to “protect” young people, the right-wing legislators block any efforts to address gun violence and the existential threat of climate change. In this election year, educators on every level need to reach as many people as possible with information about the chilling effect of these laws and how they threaten any chance of an informed and engaged democracy. A list of planned events in on the Zinn Education Project website. Find one near you. In conjunction with the Teach the Truth Day of Action, I organized a 2-hour Zoom conference on “Teaching the War in Gaza” starting at 10 AM on Saturday June 8. Please join us. We will examine experiences, teaching ideas, and document packages together. I am not neutral about genocide, war crimes, slavery, imperialism, and exploitation, they are always unacceptable. But students must evaluate evidence and decide when they apply for themselves. I work with secondary school teachers in the New York metropolitan area who are grappling with how to teach about the war in Gaza that is it its eighth month and has been responsible for the death of about 40,000 people, mostly Palestinian non-combatants. Debate in the United States is very heated, especially on college campuses. My primary recommendation for classroom teachers is to assemble current event and commentary packages for examination by students and to encourage student questions and comments. As always, student comments should be respectful of others and supported by evidence drawn from the packages and other reliable sources. Students will often ask teachers their opinions. On this issue and other controversial issues, I feel the best response is to explain to students that your job is to provide a safe space for them to share ideas with each other. My opinions are often included amongst those in the package, but I don’t identify them because the purpose of the class is for students to reach their own conclusions.
