Kitchen Table Kibitzing 6/4/2024: Commercial Breakdown [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2024-06-04 Egon Schiele: House with Blooming Mallows (1907) Good evening, Kibitzers! Welcome to Atlantic Hurricane Season! Tropical cyclone activity is not expected during the next 7 days. There are many dire predictions about how many storms, named storms, major storms, etc, but I guess, as with everything we can’t do a damn thing about, we’ll just see how it goes. Unlike tornadoes, or even wildfires nowadays, hurricanes are both large and relatively slow, so now that there is radar, and not just reports from ships, I feel like they’re not going to get the drop on me. (On the other hand, I’m the same person who lived in my car for a week in 2020, so...) On Stephen Colbert’s Late Show, sometimes guest musicians sit in with the Late Show Band (which you may remember was originally called Stay Human when Jon Batiste was the bandleader). Sometimes the guest is quite famous, and sometimes less well-known, but they are always very talented people. It’s always sad when the band and its guest start to play, often the original work of the guest, and, since that’s a signal for a commercial break, we get to hear about four bars before someone starts yammering about something they’re selling. But there is good news! The show has started posting to YouTube reasonably often with the full selections the band and guest played, on those occasions when we got done out of hearing it. They’re calling this series “Commercial Breakdown”. The show doesn’t have a playlist of just those, but it does have them in the “Musical Performances” playlist that includes all flavors of live performance on the show; it’s not as if you can go far wrong looking through there. After I noticed the collection and watched a few, I decided they needed to be a diary now, before there get to be too many for even me to stuff in here. Here’s what they have so far (as of Sunday night) — I kept thinking I’d find some I didn’t care for and I could leave them out, but no! Legendary Eagles and James Gang guitarist Joe Walsh: Funk 49. [4:55] "Neo-soul" bass virtuosa Meshell Ndegeocello: Andromeda and the Milky Way. (She renamed herself; her adopted surname is said to mean "free like a bird" in Swahili.) [6:36] Jazz trumpeter Terence Blanchard: Breathless. [5:33] Australian-American jazz/blues singer Rachael Price: Baby I Love You. [4:12] Guitarist Cory Wong: Lunchtime (from his 2019 album Motivational Music for the Syncopated Soul). [6:15] Grammy-nominated saxophonist Lakecia Benjamin: Phoenix Reimagined. [6:44] Banjo genius Béla Fleck: Big Country. [4:18] Siblings Gracie and Clyde Lawrence of the band Lawrence: Do You Wanna Do Nothing with Me? [5:53] Jazz guitarist John Scofield: I Don’t Need No Doctor. [5:06] Brazilian percussionist Nêgah Santos is a regular member of the band; she’s featured here with her song Trago Coco E Um Xaxado. [5:29] Brass-forward band Huntertones: Pontiac. Huntertones trumpeter Jon Lampley is the regular trumpeter for The Late Show Band. [4:44] Singer Lalah Hathaway sings her father Donny Hathaway's classic This Christmas. [3:45] James Taylor: How Sweet It Is. [4:02] This last one isn’t part of the Commercial Breakdown series, but it seemed as if the band should get an opportunity to shine on its own, so in this Off Air segment (a series of never-broadcast side performances), bandleader Louis Cato and the band repair to the rooftop of the Ed Sullivan Theater to play Bill Withers’ Lovely Day. This performance evidently dates from the interval when Jon Batiste was gone but the band was still called Stay Human. Band personnel: Endea Owens (bass), Joe Saylor (drums), Jon Lampley (trumpet, sousaphone), Louis Cato (like, everything), Louis Fouché (saxophone), Nêgah Santos (percussion). (Not present: Corey Bernhard, keyboards.) [3:55] In case you missed it, last night’s Late Show provided an update to the Disney Hall of Presidents attraction.
