At random I drew a tarot card. VIII. Pamela Colman Smith. Cups. I had made a list. The first card — Plot. VIII Cups. So the plot became telling how I drew a tarot card. It was Bolly and eight cups arranged where you’d think one cup was missing, but no — there are eight cups. And we see a wanderer, walking away. And we see a moon, both crescent and full. Earthshine? The moon has a face — somnambulant, uncaring. A second card, for Challenge. The Page of Pentacles. Years ago I pondered what the Pages might most logically represent. I decided they were the phases of the moon. Cups, full. Pentacles, new. Wands, waxing. Swords, waning. So, there was Bolly, and the challenge was a new moon. A moon phase. Page of Pentacles. For the third card, to represent, just me being me because: Nonsense. IV The Emperor. Enough said. The fourth card, I’d chosen “Random” for its significance — II The High Priestess. If you’re thinking moon, yes — moon. So I have just one more card. I drew The Ace of Bâtons. This card I had on my list was to represent Solution. Plot. Challenge. Nonsense. Random. Solution. And so we are right back to the first card. VIII Coupes — the wanderer, walking away, has a sturdy bâton, and all we know about him, other than the possibility that he may have an unusual hat, is that he is walking…away.
