Two Poems for Pride Month [1]

For M. V. (a transgender activist)

You are a bridge for our time,

And though you have suffered

The harsh weather

Of the denial

Of your being,

And felt the pounding steps

Of bigotry and hate,

Across your life,

Through your words and deeds

And inner pains,

Society is crossing

To a greater land

Of tolerance and freedom.

You are a monument to history

Still being written.

And although not alone

On the path,

Accompanied by your trans-sisters

And your mate,

What you have done and are doing,

Though as tiny

As one individual's strife,

It is as profound as the universe.

Your life matters,

Though very few may notice

Or acknowledge,

You are an instrument of change

And worthy of

The highest medal of gratitude

Within the stream

Of all humanity.

Making it Up as I Go Along

Pretty little me

I get to be

anyone I want to,

as long as it is

true to me

and I do not

deceive.

I'm honestly

a man with breasts

wearing make-up

in a dress

exploring a different

role to play

in a woman's way.

Tomorrow in regular wear

and with face clean,

I'll be back like you

well, with an expanded view,

and more empathy

for everyone –

both you and me.
