[1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2024-06-05 If Enbridge Line 5 breaks under the Straits of Mackinac, the Great Lakes will be irreparably damaged. The pipeline transports millions of gallons of light crude oil and has already spilled oil under land. On at least one occasion, a ship’s anchor struck the pipeline under the straits, and caused insulation fluid to spill. Enbridge disclosed the 2018 incident only because they wanted to sue the shipping company. WDIV is the NBC affiliate in Detroit, a city about 300 miles south of the straits. If Line 5 breaks under the straits, it won’t be good for Detroit. It might not be bad, but it sure won’t be good. The city gets its water from the Detroit River (technically also a strait, not a river), which connects Lake St. Clair to Lake Erie. The WDIV news team do some serious journalism sometimes, in between shilling for Wallside Windows and other local businesses. WDIV did a news documentary about the dangers of Line 5. You can stream the half hour documentary from the WDIV website right now. You can also watch it on YouTube. x YouTube Video The title of the documentary, as submitted for consideration to the regional Edward R. Murrow Awards, was “Does Line 5 threaten the Great Lakes?” The answer is given in the documentary: yes, very much. One expert is quoted saying that the Straits of Mackinac are the worst place to put an oil pipeline. It’s true that Enbridge has pledged $2 billion to clean up an underwater spill, and has offered to make a safer, more heavily reinforced pipeline. But with Enbridge’s track record for opacity, I don’t trust either of those promises. Enbridge treats the waters and lands their pipeline runs through as their own property, willfully disregarding the aboriginal peoples who live off those lands and waters. Enbridge is listed on the stock market, NYSE:ENB. The stock’s most recent dividend payout was just 67¢, but that’s still a 7.39% dividend yield. Then no one cares that some silly aboriginals got their feelings hurt. That also means that in news coverage the adjective “controversial” is used a lot more than the adjective “dangerous.” WDIV’s documentary was submitted for consideration and won in the News Documentary category of the 2024 Region 7 Edward R. Murrow Awards (you can see the full list of winners on a page on the website of the Regional Television Digital News Association). All of WDIV’s employees should be proud of this accomplishment and recognition. Naturally, they’re running a spot highlighting the award, as well they should. The problem is that the spot actually has the text on screen “Congratulations Line 5,” and the voice-over doesn’t do much to help clear up the confusion. If at least they wrote “Congratulations Line 5 Documentary” or even “Congratulations Line 5 News Special,” it would be clearer that they’re congratulating their news team, not the dangerous pipeline that threatens to almost destroy the Great Lakes.
