[1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2024-06-06 I’ll have to link to it later, but Republican Congressman Byron Donalds of FL was on Joy Reid’s MSNBC show for an interview about his recent remarks about the Jim Crow Era. Reid played most of Donalds comments (He was in Philadelphia doing GOP “outreach” to black voters). And Donalds cried the blues and “gaslighting” by Democrats and the media over what he said being taken out of context. I still cannot find the extended version of his comments, but here is some reporting on what he said and his then defense of those comments about the Jim Crow Era: “Growing up, the one thing I knew I wanted to do — and this is not about my father, this is about what I wanted to do — is I wanted to be a father,” Donalds said. “So one of the things that’s actually happening in our culture, which you’re now starting to see in our politics, is the reinvigoration of Black families, with younger Black men and Black women, and that is also helping to breed the revival of a Black middle class in America.” He then made his remarks about the political contrast of the state of Black families before and after the civil rights movement in the 1960s. “During Jim Crow, the Black family was together,” he said. “During Jim Crow, more Black people were not just conservative — Black people have always been conservative-minded — but more Black people voted conservatively. And then H.E.W., Lyndon Johnson — you go down that road, and now we are where we are.” Reid pressed Donalds on why he brought up the Jim Crow Era multiple times during his Philadelphia appearance. And he kept saying that black families were together with FATHERS who could protect their families from the deprevations of the Jim Crow Era. What is implied during that interview is that the breakdown of black families was due to the Civil Rights Era legislation signed by President Lyndon Johnson. Also, all those Great Society programs helped create black dependency that contributed to the breakdown of black families. Well, Donalds didnt need to imply any of that shit because he confirmed that is what he meant with his comments: “Now, they’re trying to say that I said Black people were doing better under Jim Crow,” Donalds said in a social media video. “I never said that… What I said was that you had more Black families under Jim Crow. And it was the Democrat policies or under H.E.W., under the welfare state, that did help to destroy the Black family. That’s what I said. And I also said, you’re seeing a reinvigoration of Black families today in America. And that is a good thing. So don’t listen to the lies from the Biden administration. I know what I said.” He didn’t restate the above while talking with Reid. She also raked him over the coals about two other lies he told about the Jim Crow Era. First, black fathers could NOT protect their families from being killed during Jim Crow. In fact, Reid told a story about a racist murder of a 15 year old black boy in front of his father in 1944 Florida. The boy had made the mistake of sending a Christmas card to a white girl in which he professed his love for her, and the girl’s father kidnapped the boy and his father. They bound the boy and gave him a choice of being shot or jumping into the Suwanee River. The boy jumped into the river and drowned. His father could do nothing to protect his son. Donald couldn’t really say much about that great protection incident. Then, Reid pointed out the blatantly obvious: BLACK PEOPLE COULDN’T VOTE DURING THE JIM CROW ERA! Now, Donald admitted that black people couldn’t vote in the South during Jim Crow, but there were other places where they could vote! And it was all the Democrats fault! Elie Mystal and others have pointed out what Donalds real role is with this phony argument. It’s to make racist white people feel good about themselves. Black Americans are supposedly far worse off because of what Democrats did during the 1960’s. If we all just treated blacks worse like we did during Jim Crow, black Americans would be better off! Sorry about the obviousness of all this folks, but I’m just an old white guy. And when I notice the racist lies coming out of a black grifters mouth, you know the racism is very strong. And even I feel insulted.
