IDF deploys US GBU-39 Bombs on UN School Sheltering Internally Displaced Gazans [1]

WAPO reports that “two GBU-39 bombs were used to strike a UN school in central Gaza today that killed 40 persons, including 14 children, 9 women and grievously wounded 74 others. Bodies of the children were brought to the al-Aqsa Hospital in Deir-al-Balah.” As usual, the IDF claims it was targeting militants. The school was sheltering 6000 internally displaced Gazans, but this fact did not deter the IDF from deploying US made munitions on the site. To wit, www.washingtonpost.com/… (behind paywall).

It is a violation of international humanitarian law to target shelters, yet Israel has done so against “174 UN school/ shelters killing 450 persons to date.” Nevertheless, Israel violates the law with impunity and repeats the tired refrain that “Hamas is using human shields, hence the high civilian death count.” Hiding behind a toddler is hardly a “shield” against bullets, tank shells and missiles. The Lavender AI and Where’s Daddy targeting system is however, a more plausible explanation for the staggering 16 civilians to 1 militant death ratio that comports with the Israel’s acceptable murder threshold.

Despite the continued death and destruction, neither PM Netanyahu nor the Hamas leader, Sinwar, is in any rush to embrace President Biden’s diplomatic off-ramp. The world powers have endorsed Biden’s reasonable deal and it is an unforgivable act for the parties to the dispute to perpetuate such suffering upon Gazan civilians and Israeli hostages. As William Shakespeare wrote in Julius Caesar,

“There is a tide in the affairs of men

Which, taken at the flood, leads on to fortune;

Omitted, all the voyage of their life

Is bound in shallows and in miseries.

On such a full sea are we now afloat;

And we must take the current when it serves,

Or lose our ventures.”
