The 80th Anniversary of D-Day: We Salute Our Heroes [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2024-06-06 Today is the 80th anniversary of D-Day. It's not an anniversary we celebrate with a joy and happiness or with a big party. Its a day we celebrate with respect and honor. Allied troops stormed the beaches of Normandy, France on this day in 1944. Almost 160,000 men bravely crashed the beaches that day, not knowing if they were ever going to see home again. They tried to find cover as German bullets relentlessly rained down on them. Grenades, naval guns, bazooka, and other weapons tore through the allies changing line but they did not back down. They did not retreat. They pushed forward. The normally calm and peaceful beaches were transformed into a literal hell on earth. Dead bodies littered the bloodstained sands. The injured, calling out for help. Over 4,400 men bravely gave their lives that day. Over 5,000 Allied men were injured. But still they persisted. They did not retreat. They pushed forward. The Germans were eventually outmanned, outplanned, and outgunned by Allied troops. Their courage and tenacity were they keys to their victory. They always pushed forward. They didn't retreat. They never backed down. This was the beginning of the end for the German Forces. This defeat would prove to be one of the major turning points of the war. We honor those men who made the ultimate sacrifice in the name of freedom. We salute those who survived. All these men have our eternal gratitude. They were truly the best of all of us. They will always be true heroes.
