A Dramatic, Compelling Way to Expose How Un-American This Republican Party Has Become [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2024-06-07 This is how I’m beginning an op/ed that I intend to serve soon as my weekly op/ed I publish in newspapers in the very red congressional district where I was the Democratic nominee for Congress in 2012. (That’s the piece of Conservative America — which has gone off the deep end — to which I have any regular access.) ************************* Let’s just imagine that the Republicans are right with all their hue and cry about Trump’s conviction being politically motivated, a weaponization of the Justice system to persecute a political opponent. (That's emphatically not true (as I’ve written here previously in “Look at the #%@! Evidence!”). But let’s pretend for a moment that the accusations are valid — that Trump is the victim of injustice, not the dangerous criminal who needs to be held accountable.) In that scenario – where, as the Republican leaders are claiming is the case, the administration run by one of America’s two main parties is using the legal system as a weapon to bring down the leader of the other major party – how should that wronged party behave? Isn’t it obvious? All our officials take an oath to defend our constitutional order. They should be outraged at any abuse of that Rule of Law. And they should be trumpeting to the nation not only that the other side has betrayed the nation – violating their oath – but also that they, the victims of that Weaponization of the Law, will do everything they can to restore the Rule of Law. Instead, they’ve done the opposite: they’ve said nothing about making America again the nation where the law is applied justly, and not for political purposes, in accordance with the most basic values on which the United States was founded. On the contrary, they are promising that – when they get back into power – they will take revenge. (The New York Times quotes “a growing chorus of Republicans" who -- claiming that "the criminal cases against Trump are a political weaponization of the justice system" -- "argue that Republicans should do the same thing.”) *************************** A couple of other points that I’m contemplating putting into that op/ed: [END] --- [1] Url: https://www.dailykos.com/stories/2024/6/7/2245331/-A-Dramatic-Compelling-Way-to-Expose-How-Un-American-This-Republican-Party-Has-Become?pm_campaign=front_page&pm_source=trending&pm_medium=web Published and (C) by Daily Kos Content appears here under this condition or license: Site content may be used for any purpose without permission unless otherwise specified. via Magical.Fish Gopher News Feeds: gopher://magical.fish/1/feeds/news/dailykos/
