ACLU claims to be bracing for either presidential election outcome [1]

The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) sent me a text message yesterday about a series of memos they’re working on about how a second Biden or Trump term would affect the civil rights organization’s work.

I’m sure the ACLU has policy disagreements with President Biden. And the ACLU does not “endorse or oppose candidates for elected office.”

But… be honest, ACLU, which candidate winning are you more worried about?

It’s quite telling that they’re starting with a memo about Trump on immigration. We already know how convicted felon Trump demonizes immigrants from the so-called “Mexican countries” for bringing drugs and crime to America. And after all these years of a loveless marriage to Melanija née Knavs, he might not be feeling so hot about immigrants from Slovenia.

According to the ACLU memo,

If given a second term, Donald Trump promises to decimate American communities by targeting immigrants who are already contributing members of society and blocking new immigrants from coming lawfully to the United States. Trump has made clear that he will double down on what he did during his presidency — without regard for the law, decency, or common sense.

And that’s just the first paragraph on the first page of the 17-page memo.

What are they going to say about President Biden on immigration? I think they should say something to the effect that President Biden is a decent man trying to do the right thing, but beset by Republicans creating problems that Republicans then blame on President Biden.

But if Republicans are a minority in both chambers of Congress next year, it will be considerably easier for President Biden to do right by the very immigrants this country should be inviting, the immigrants who do the hard, necessary and thankless work that we don’t want to do.

The other ACLU memos will be released over the summer.

Donate to the ACLU if you’re convinced. But for what it’s worth, I think it’s a higher priority to donate to Democrats who can flip U. S. House districts held by Republicans.
