[1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2024-06-07 I’ve been reading “Cracking the Nazi Code” by Jason Bell and stunned by the missed opportunities the allies had at the end of WWI. Essentially, by denying the Weimar Republic the economic aid required to support their fledgling democracy they ensured the rise of fascism. While those facts are codified in every high school history book, how close we came to an alternative reality, and the eerie similarities we are witnessing in Europe today has made me question whether we’re not making the same mistake with Russia. Rebuilding Ukraine and partnering with them as a NATO country is an obvious postwar objective. I’m wondering though if we are missing a similar opportunity to bolster democracy in Russia by publicly offering, not only a lifting of economic sanctions but of investment and military cooperation conditional on them meeting institutional democratic standards. Russia has been engaged in assemetic warfare for some time now. I don’t believe we have much to lose by offering ordinary Russians some hope for the future.
