What veterans of her court think of Aileen Cannon [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2024-06-07 Isolated and inexperienced: A portrait of the judge overseeing Trump’s documents case from veterans of her courtroom CNN spoke to ten attorneys who have had cases before her. The article starts out telling us that two years ago, with a little over a year on the federal bench, Cannon was handed her first criminal trial when Senior Judge Paul C. Huck offered to preside over the trial. He claimed it wasn't because she needed help, but rather because he likes volunteering for trials in south Florida. But the picture painted of Cannon by the attorneys who spoke to CNN could lead one to question the real reason that Huck stepped in. Some of the attorneys say that because of her post Cannon is isolated from more seasoned and experienced judges and that that is probably one of the reasons that the Trump case has been dragged out and now put on hold indefinitely. They also said Cannon’s lack of trial experience, both as a lawyer and a judge, is apparent. In her seven years as a Justice Department attorney, Cannon participated on the trial teams of just four criminal cases. And on the bench, she’s only presided over a handful of criminal trials – and Huck took over one of them… ...The attorneys described Cannon as extremely diligent and well prepared...But they also said that some of her habits that have raised eyebrows in Trump’s case have plagued her approach from the bench more generally. Those habits include being distracted by irrelevant legal questions and losing focus on core issues, struggles with issues that drag cases on for months where other judges resolve them in weeks, One attorney called her “inefficient”, another “ indecisive “, a third said she was “ overwhelmed by the process”. Her approach as a jurist – detail-obsessed to the point of tedious – appears uniquely prone to being exploited by a defense team eager to delay the case. The article is lengthy and goes into further detail involving her approach to the Trump documents case and, from what I get from the piece, is that she is in over her head. But none of that really matters if her goal, as it appears to be, is to keep the trial from ever happening at all.
