[1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2024-06-07 Seeing a lot of reasons for folks not wanting to vote. Both candidates too old. We’re screwed no matter what. Voting doesn’t change anything. The candidates don’t understand my generation. Yada, yada, yada. So, here’s two good reasons to vote. First, conservatives finagled their way to a 6-3 majority on the SC. They’ve already introduced Christian religion into our schools (despite the majority of our country no longer attending organized religion). Ended a 50 year right to abortion. And are seriously looking at striking our current right to contraception. Conservatives can rule from the highest bench in the land for years to come. However, the two oldest justices are Alito and Thomas and both are conservative. 73 and 75 years old respectively. Easy to see either, or both, retire during the next four years. Do you think a Trump presidency and a Republican senate are going to give us rational SC replacements? Or will continued Trump and Republican rule result in just more of the same judicial lunacy we already endure from the current SC. Coming out and voting to keep a Democrat controlled Senate and another Biden Presidency could well result in two liberal justices replacing Alito and Thomas. Which in turn creates a 5-4 majority for liberals on the SC. Liberals won’t support the continuance of forcing Christian religion into our schools. They won’t support the removal of contraception as a fundamental national right. They won’t support continued removal of rights from our citizens in the LBGTQ segments of our society. In short, they will stop Republican cruelty against women and LBGTQ immediately (which I’ll note constitute over half our population). That seems to me to be a good reason to vote. Second, Republicans have an anti-contraception leader in each branch of our government. Trump wants restrictions on contraception and would prefer removal of the national right in order to allow states to follow their own paths for or against contraception — and Republican led states will ban such if the national right is removed. He will advocate for such as President because he’s already advocating such while running for President. The current Speaker of the House, Mike Johnson, has been a proponent of removing contraception for years. He’s been actively working against that right for many years now. Republicans in the Senate recently voted down a bill that ensured contraception rights for all in our country. SC Justice Thomas noted, in his concurrence of the SC ruling striking down Abortion rights, that he wanted to revisit the SC Griswold ruling. That ruling established contraception as a national right for married couples. The SC followed that up a few years later with Eisenstadt case ruling contraception rights for those of us not married. The intent of SC justice Thomas is to strike down these rulings and return contraception back to individual state control. This seems to me to be another good reason to vote. So come out and vote to keep American rights intact. And also to restore the ones Republicans have destroyed during their rule on the SC. Getting a Democrat Senate, House, Presidency, and a liberal SC is doable if we turn out and vote in the numbers we did in 2020. I’d like to live in a country where everyone has equal rights. Not in a patchwork of states that disallow rights based on the Republican party’s minority Christian religious beliefs. And that, to me, seems to be the best reason to vote in not only the upcoming election but in every election occurring during your lifetime. :-) [END] --- [1] Url: https://www.dailykos.com/stories/2024/6/7/2245302/-Why-Vote-Two-reasons?pm_campaign=front_page&pm_source=more_community&pm_medium=web Published and (C) by Daily Kos Content appears here under this condition or license: Site content may be used for any purpose without permission unless otherwise specified. via Magical.Fish Gopher News Feeds: gopher://magical.fish/1/feeds/news/dailykos/
