Graham compares D-Day to Putin's invasion of Ukraine [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2024-06-09 Yep, now and then, I think about whether it was really important that the Allies invaded Sicily before the D-Day ever happened. Technically, it would have been sufficient then to get ashore on Italian mainland and continue northwards, pass the Alps and get to Germany. So it was probably important. en.wikipedia.org/… Early on 13 July, elements of the British 5th Division on Eighth Army's right flank, which had been delayed by Kampfgruppe Schmalz, entered Augusta.[100] On their left, British 50th Division had pushed up Route 114 toward Lentini, 25 kilometres (15 mi) northwest of Augusta and met increasing resistance from the Napoli Division. Then the invasion of Italy took place, also well ahead of D-Day. en.wikipedia.org/… Winston Churchill wanted to invade Italy, which in November 1942 he had called "the soft underbelly of the axis" (American General Mark W. Clark would later call it "one tough gut").[2] ... On the German side, Kesselring lacked the strength to push the Salerno landing back, and was refused two panzer divisions from northern Italy to assist him.[18] So, that was actually “one tough gut.” I don’t really think the Allies would have ever invaded Normandy if they didn’t have the moment of surprise on their side, because they really didn’t need the D-Day anymore because they already invaded Italy and German losses were high and they were anyway depleting enough reinforcements to keep Germany busy. So it’s kinda ugly to compare D-Day to Putin’s invasion of Ukraine I guess. OK, Graham is saying that it is somewhat unnecessary but it is not prima cause but the invasion of Sicily is. So there shouldn’t be too much confusion about it despite the Allies opening a second front in the west in continental Europe. www.rawstory.com/… Discussing battling Russian President Vladimir Putin for invading Ukraine, Graham tried to compare that war with fighting Nazi Germany. see also:France/UK:Rishi! left D-Day ceremony early and caused a political hitstorm [END] --- [1] Url: https://www.dailykos.com/stories/2024/6/9/2245754/-Graham-compares-D-Day-to-Putin-s-invasion-of-Ukraine?pm_campaign=front_page&pm_source=more_community&pm_medium=web Published and (C) by Daily Kos Content appears here under this condition or license: Site content may be used for any purpose without permission unless otherwise specified. via Magical.Fish Gopher News Feeds: gopher://magical.fish/1/feeds/news/dailykos/
