[1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2024-06-09 Rachel Griffin Accurso, known to YouTube viewers as Ms Rachel, creates and posts music-infused videos intended as resources for preschool kids with learning or speech disabilities and their parents. She has masters degrees in early education and music education. Motivated by the lack of online resources available for her own son’s speech delay issues, she decided five years ago to use her training to create the resources her son and other kids needed to master language development. Her YouTube channel has grown to more than 10 million subscribers and billions of views, making her one of the most popular online educators for preschoolers. She also posts on Instagram, TikTok, and FaceBook with informational videos aimed at adult caregivers. In one video, she opens jumbo-sized plastic crayons to reveal small toys inside that match the color of the crayon, describing each toy slowly and enthusiastically. In another, she’s visiting a doctor’s office and explores with childlike curiosity what to expect at a routine check-up. Sometimes, she’s just singing nursery rhymes and dancing along, encouraging her viewers to join in. Ms Rachel, over the course of the last five years, has made over 100 YouTube videos for kids, and each one is paired with a smile and a song. But it seems Ms Rachel has a moral compass, and that’s a problem for some people. Her education philosophy tends toward diversity, equity, and inclusion. That keeps getting her in hot water with RW hate-mongers and their angry followers. In 2023, video segments on her Songs for Littles website featured Jules, a transgender, non-binary singer/songwriter. A massive outcry on TikTok and RW sites criticized the site for introducing gender identity issues to preschoolers, even though the videos did no such thing. The criticism caused Ms Rachel to announce that she was taking a break from TikTok. In May of this year, she posted on Instagram and TikTok that she was planning a fundraiser with Save the Children to provide desperately needed resources to children in war-torn countries such as Ukraine and Gaza. This time, her message was criticized because it did not include Israel, despite the fact that Save the Children does not currently have a presence in Israel. The most recent brouhaha began last week, when Ms Rachel posted an Instagram message celebrating the beginning of Pride Month. Happy pride to all of our wonderful followers and friends. This month and every month, I celebrate you, I’m so glad you’re here, I’m so glad you’re exactly who you are. Recognizing that a message of diversity and inclusion would anger a portion of her audience, she added To those who are going to comment they can’t watch the show anymore because of this support: No worries and much love your way, God bless. I am not chasing fame or views, I’m standing strong in love. Naturally her message of love and acceptance resonated universally, absolutely no one was offended, hearts and minds were aligned, and all her former RW critics rallied to support her, right? Well, not exactly. The post, which garnered more than 120,000 likes on Instagram and 393,000 on TikTok, became immediate fodder for the anti-LGBTQ culture war, which has infiltrated classrooms, libraries and online rhetoric. . . A slew of right-wing figures blasted Accurso online and used their platforms to encourage parents to bar their children from watching her content. Sigh. . . . Why can’t we all just get along. Among her critics are several well-known RW asshats and rabble-rousers including Matt Walsh, columnist for the Daily Wire, and Chaya Raichik, founder of the RW Twitter account Libs of TikTok. I’m not going to link to their nonsense, although it’s easy to find. Seriously though, if Matt and Chaya are against you, you must be doing something right. Keep up the good work, Ms Rachel.
