[1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2024-06-09 I am one of the 100 million Americans who regularly listens to podcasts.* There are many kinds of podcasts, and depending on the kind of podcast, like any media, they can cause and reflect both good and bad aspects of our nature For every Kyle Kulinski, there is a Ben Shapiro. And then there’s Joe Rogan... Anyways, I like and listen to mostly educational podcasts, because I like to learn things, and podcasts provide a means for me to do it when I’m multi-tasking while I’m alone. For the past several years, I’ve been educating myself on certain gaps I have in my general knowledge and thus my top 5 educational podcasts are, in no particular order: The History of English Podcas t: A chronological history of the English language examined through the lens of historical events that shaped the development and spread of our language from the Eurasian steppe to the entire world. The first 50 episodes cover proto-Indo-European to Old English and are IMO the most interesting part of the podcast thus far. Misquoting Jesus : Featuring Bart Ehrman, the show “aims to uncover the many fascinating, little known facts about the New Testament, the historical Jesus, and the rise of Christianity.” Every week uncovers a different topic. They are very informative and a great introduction to the scholarly study of early Xtianity. Ehrman does a great job differentiating between the academic consensus and his own opinions. Philosophise This! : As the creator says ”Join me on my quest to know more today than I did yesterday and to limit the suffering of others.” He wonderfully explaines and explores complex concepts through the use of tangible examples and a relatable conversational approach. Gone Medieva l: Is what it sounds like, centered on English history. Ever wonder about the Rise of Wessex, or how to cook like a 12th century chef? Or how about what a tavern owner thought was a hoot? Each episode brings in an expert to discuss. In Our Time : the grand daddy of them all, the GPOAT. Starting as a radio show in 1998, Melvyn Bragg (kinda the UK’s Bill Moyers) and his 3 guests (experts) discuss the history of ideas - including topics drawn from philosophy, science, history, religion and culture. Come to think of it, I recommend this one the most. It’s a real banger as they say... I also enjoy watching films and TV shows with a sci fi or historical bent. If you like those things too, I couldn't recommend Bald Move any more highly. They are lot of fun and they do their homework. A good time is had by all around. I also like much of the programming on my local PBS affiliate KQED, but that is perhaps the subject of another diary. So, How about you? What podcasts (or radio shows) do you listen to and why? *The line between a podcast and a radio show and even Youtube and Tik Tok is blurred, to be sure, and I’ve blurred the difference with my inclusion of In Our Time on my list. But, because I came across the radio program through podcasts, I think it a fair inclusion.
