All fun and games till someone nukes an eye out [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2024-06-10 Trash balloons. (From CNN) Any headline with those words would usually provoke irritation I suppose. But in the case of the Koreas, it worries me as I lived there for nine years. For the past several weeks, North Korea has floated garbage balloons across the DMZ to drop garbage in South Korea. Some reports claim thousands. They are mostly cigarette butt and manure filled. But authorities check it out of course as it could be much worse. This can be likened to what South Koreans have been doing for years. But the balloons going North have always been loaded with USB sticks with K-Pop, K-Soap Operas, and the like. The recent response by South Korea has been “to resume broadcasting anti-North Korean propaganda over loudspeakers in border areas.” Garbage balloons and loud music can seem rather juvenile. But this Tit-for-tat shit can grow to more. South Korea is awesome is many ways. The culture seems to be based upon long term thinking. The DMZ is bizarre. The morning of my visit there was damp and foggy. Rather symbolic I think. And I corrected three typos on the document one must sign in order to visit. This document is written by the US people in charge. Anyway, I remember the morning after that terrible election in 2016 when the election results were announced. Some of my students were in tears as the Pretensident-elect had said that US soldiers in South Korea were unnecessary. (We did not know then that everything coming out of his mouth is worthless.) Garbage balloons and speaker “wars” might mean little to nothing compared to the current situations across the planet. But I have noticed that Kim Jong Un gets rather grumpy when world attention is not directed toward him enough. Funny how similar he is to the former resident of the White House. And so, just a bit more garbage, both literal and figurative, to be added to the plate of what is wrong with this species, today, this week, this month.
