[1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2024-06-10 Macron takes huge risk with surprise election — link to BBC President Emmanuel Macron has called snap parliamentary elections later this month in the wake of a big victory for his rival Marine Le Pen's National Rally in the European Parliament vote. The far-right party is on course to win 32% of the vote, exit polls say, more than twice that of the president's Renaissance party. Announcing the dissolution of parliament, he said the two rounds of voting would take place on 30 June and 7 July, a few weeks before the Paris Olympics. The risk is not as big as some would have you believe. French elections take two rounds Round 1 Any number of candidates can stand, meeting basic election requirements, and round 1 can be won by Getting over 50% of the vote, and there is no need for round 2, Getting one of the two top places, then you move on to round 2 Round 2 The candidates move on to the second voting round, and the vote winner is then elected. There are 577 constituencies; to win one seat, you have to get over 50% of the vote, unlike the EU elections which are divided proportionately from party lists. The French voting system can be used tactically this is how the extreme right-wing has been blocked before in Presidential elections. It is risky to some extent, or it could be considered a tactical maneuver hoping the population hasn’t gone completely nuts. Macron is no amateur. Hope this Helps Fingers crossed ~A [END] --- [1] Url: https://www.dailykos.com/stories/2024/6/10/2245805/-Macron-is-not-crazy-the-French-electoral-system-could-save-his-ass?pm_campaign=front_page&pm_source=trending&pm_medium=web Published and (C) by Daily Kos Content appears here under this condition or license: Site content may be used for any purpose without permission unless otherwise specified. via Magical.Fish Gopher News Feeds: gopher://magical.fish/1/feeds/news/dailykos/
