NBC News: Unilateral US-Hamas Deal Could Be Considered for Release of American Hostages [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2024-06-10 According to NBC News, two current senior US officials claim “the Biden Administration would consider a US-Hamas deal via Qatari interlocutors” sans Israel “to secure the release of five American hostages in Hamas custody should the current Biden cease-fire phased plan talks, which include Israel, fail.” To wit, www.nbcnews.com/…A deal implies that something must be given to facilitate the exchange. The NBC report suggests that the “Hamas could have an incentive to cut a unilateral deal with the U.S. because doing so would likely further strain relations between the U.S. and Israel and put additional domestic political pressure on Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.” Netanyahu has been stonewalling to prolong the war for his own political survival and has refused to come up with a viable post-war Gaza plan. His preference for undertaking risky hostage extraction operations involving impermissibly high civilian death tolls instead of negotiating a cease-fire with hostage release does not bode well for the American hostages. Although Saturday’s extraction of the four Israeli hostages fortunately delivered them to their overjoyed families, hundreds of Gazan civilians in a nearby Nuseirat market and mosque were killed and grievously wounded during the operation. Read apnews.com/...for detailed reporting on the casualties. The militants are now threatening to make life even harder for the remaining hostages as a result. Meanwhile, Benny Gantz resigned from the war cabinet yesterday citing Netanyahu’s refusal to endorse a viable post-war plan for Gaza in which an international and Palestinian administration for Gaza is put in place. Gantz was equally frustrated with Netanyahu’s failure to bring all the hostages home through negotiation. The extremist, Ben-Gvir, now insists on taking Gantz’ place on the war cabinet, so that he can push for annihilation and annexation. Finally, the US is submitting its phased cease-fire plan to the UN Security Council for a vote. Even if it passes, the question remains whether the parties to the dispute will abide by it. If they fail to, what coercive measures will the great powers implement to force compliance? Read the NBC news report here: www.nbcnews.com/...
