Usually as he ‘rose — stretching out and dusting off, he was simply hungry. But in the moonlight, the blurred reflections, glimmer of shadows, and so lonely a light — he was lonely, as so often, with only his thoughts. He dusted himself off again. Travel by night, sleep by day, safety and then warmth. His thoughts wandered as he set out, his course guided by the wayward moon. Was it full? It was a wintry spring, teasing at summer. Maybe he would meet someone come morning. What would he say? Best to be pleasant, food might be offered by way of courtesy. He straightened his hat, straightened it again, it was an unusual hat — took it off and slapped it on his knee, then the other knee. Mussed his hair, and snugged it well on.The moon was, where..? He walked to? as much away as anywhere. He paid no mind to the bright stars — fine way to tumble into a ditch. But he was, he knew he was lonely. Lady Moon, he thought. Best thing for a long night, a cold companion. He had a few scraps of bread in his side pocket, and crumbs — crumbs had a special flavor. Water? maybe look that way. He first caught a whiff of and then light from a distant fire, a campfire. Some folks about. Cooking something. He changed his direction to head, by his nature, away. Cooking. By the time the moon would set in the west, the sun would rise in the east — and his shadow would be walking ahead of him. His pockets were empty.
