People on the right have become remarkable, over the past twenty-some years, for how completely they listen only to voices in the Republican world. Certainly not to anything said by a Democrat, or a liberal of any kind. But beyond that, they’ve been taught to disregard — or tune out — whatever any journalist, or scientist, or scholar, or foreigner might say that contradicts the current conservative orthodoxy, which has amounted to the Republican party line.

We now approach an election in which those Republicans who care about American democracy, and the basic values on which the United States was founded, must reject their party, because it has taken such a dark path.

But the question is: how are they to be persuaded about the truth about how Donald Trump must not become President, and how the Republican Party that is abetting him in his assault on our constitutional order and the Rule of Law must be defeated?

Since they’re unlikely to listen to any voices coming from outside the Republican world, America’s best chance lies with those Republican leaders who recognize the threat that Donald Trump represents. They can speak to the long-standing moral passions of conservative American patriots, and, as Republicans, they have a chance of being heard.

Those in the Trump trance will reflexively reject those leaders as betrayers of the Leader. But there are many others who might otherwise vote for Trump whose attention is not so fully captured by this extraordinary American leader who specializes in the politics of lies and crimes and cheating and a transparent concern only for himself.

It is to them that American needs a goodly number of Republican leaders to stand up and call out to their fellow Republicans.

That might make the difference between whether American democracy survives, or is overthrown by an ugly, dangerous, destructive Force of Fascism.
