Sinwar and Netanyahu Are Obstacles To The Phased Cease-fire Deal [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2024-06-11 Despite the consensus of the world community on the need for accepting and implementing the Biden cease-fire deal, the WSJ reports that Hamas terror chief, Yahya Sinwar, is perfectly contented with the staggering Gazan death tolls and is in no hurry to adopt the plan. CNN cites the WSJ article, “We have the Israelis right where we want them,” Yahya Sinwar told other Hamas leaders recently, according to one of the messages, the WSJ reported Monday. In another, Sinwar is said to have described civilian deaths as “necessary sacrifices” while citing past independence-related conflicts in countries like Algeria...” “In another exchange that took place as Israel set a deadline in February to enter Rafah before the Muslim month of Ramadan, the WSJ reported that Sinwar urged Hamas’ political leaders not to make concessions and instead push for a permanent end to the war, adding that high civilian casualties would ramp up global pressure on Israel to halt the conflict.” “Israel’s journey in Rafah won’t be a walk in the park,” Sinwar allegedly said in a message to the Hamas political leadership.” To wit, www.cnn.com/… Bearing these points in mind, Hamas has given its response to the Qatari interlocutors regarding the UN Security Council Resolution. The NYT reports, “the Hamas response proposed amendments to the cease-fire plan, including firm timetables for not only a short-term truce, but a permanent one, and for a full Israeli withdrawal.” “Netanyahu still maintains that the deal will not be accepted until Hamas’ governing and military capabilities are destroyed.” To wit, www.nytimes.com/…That goal is considered unrealistic by former War Cabinet member Gadi Eisenkot. See www.cnn.com/... The Israelis have received the Hamas response and believe that Hamas has changed the parameters of the Biden deal in the manner characterized by the NYT. Read TOI: www.timesofisrael.com/… Blinken has a task of Herculean proportions before him. It appears that neither Sinwar nor Netanyahu is particularly eager to embrace the Biden plan which has the imprimatur of the Security Council. Meanwhile, the hostage families and the common civilians in Gaza would like nothing more than an end to the captivity and slaughter. The NYT cites the opinion of a Gazan taxi driver Mr. Nems who is sheltering in Khan Younis with his family: “We don’t want bombardment and humiliation anymore... But he said he was still worried that the cease-fire would not come into effect, blaming Hamas and Israel for prolonging the war while Gazans suffered.“They have been killing us slowly and wasting time,” he said. www.nytimes.com/… For the sake of the hostages and thousands of innocent Gazan civilians, let us hope that the UN Security Council Resolution is adopted by the parties to the war.
