White to move and mate in two #521 - Alan Turing [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2024-06-11 Alan Turing OBE FRS (23 June 1912 – 7 June 1954), English mathematician, computer scientist, logician, cryptanalyst, philosopher and theoretical biologist, died on June 7, 1954. Turing is widely considered to be the father of theoretical computer science. Turing was prosecuted in 1952 for homosexual acts. He accepted hormone treatment, a procedure commonly referred to as chemical castration, as an alternative to prison. Turing tragically died on 7 June 1954, aged 41, from cyanide poisoning. Following a campaign in 2009, British prime minister Gordon Brown made an official public apology for "the appalling way [Turing] was treated". Queen Elizabeth II granted a pardon in 2013. The term "Alan Turing law" is used informally to refer to a 2017 law in the UK that retroactively pardoned men cautioned or convicted under historical legislation that outlawed homosexual acts. en.wikipedia.org/... Here are some quotes from Alan Turing on machine and human intelligence — The original question, 'Can machines think?' I believe to be too meaningless to deserve discussion. If a machine is expected to be infallible, it cannot also be intelligent. I believe that at the end of the century the use of words and general educated opinion will have altered so much that one will be able to speak of machines thinking without expecting to be contradicted. We like to believe that Man is in some subtle way superior to the rest of creation. It is best if he can be shown to be necessarily superior, for then there is no danger of him losing his commanding position. Do you know why people like violence? It is because it feels good. Humans find violence deeply satisfying. But remove the satisfaction, and the act becomes hollow. Today’s puzzle was composed in 1916 by noted Italian chess composer Giorgio Guidelli (1897 - 1924).
