Interestingly, it often turns out that the message actually went through anyway. If also sometimes not. So, when I get that 504 message, I leave that page/tab just as it is, open a fresh tab, and use that tab to go look at my Daily Kos kosmail inbox to check on what actually happened. At the inbox, I select the message thread in question … providing it’s there. It nearly always is! If not, I return to the tab with the 504 page, back-arrow to get to the unsent message, and usually its text etc is still there in a kosmail form… roughly like the example below.
