Morning Consult/Politico: VP Harris #1 in 2028 matchup and "the Hillary Clinton lesson" [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2024-06-13 The new poll from Morning Consult and Politico on Vice President Kamala Harris reveals a treasure trove of data on how voters are seeing her now—and how she may fare in 2028. Here is a link to the poll itself… National Tracking Poll And here is the link to and salient quotes from the article itself... New poll goes deep on Kamala Harris’ liabilities and strengths as a potential president Harris does perform better than Joe Biden among African Americans, according to the POLITICO/Morning Consult poll. She also saw some of her highest numbers on key issues like abortion. By CHRISTOPHER CADELAGO 06/12/2024 05:00 AM EDT With voter concern about President Joe Biden’s age haunting his chances of reelection, a new poll shows his next in line, Vice President Kamala Harris, facing serious doubts about her ability to win the presidency herself, or to perform the job well were she to inherit it. The POLITICO/Morning consult poll reveals that only a third of voters think it’s likely Harris would win an election were she to become the Democratic nominee, and just three of five Democrats believe she would prevail. A quarter of independents think she would win. That skepticism extends to her potential future role as the head of her party. Forty-two percent of voters described her as a strong leader, including three-quarters of Democrats but only a third of independents. That’s the opening. But a deeper dive into the article and the poll results is a powerfully clarifying and very thorough snapshot of where Vice President Harris stands with Democrats in particular. Yes, it does also include Independents and Republicans. This quote from a Harris supporter is blunt and astute. Not just in her analysis of where Harris stands with Democratic voters, but how Democratic voters feel about female Presidential nominees in general… “She’s done an admirable job on reproductive health and issues important to the Black community and related to youth. But at the same time, she’s falling into the same spot that many vice presidents fall into, which is that she doesn’t have a very public role outside of her lane,” said RL Miller, a climate activist and outgoing member of the Democratic National Committee from California. “People don’t associate her with issues like foreign policy, which is so important these days. She isn’t being credited with the larger international and domestic work.” Miller describes herself as a “longtime fan of Kamala Harris,” and said the vice president would be her first choice “if God forbid something were to happen to Biden.” But, Miller added, “ I am afraid Democrats have internalized the Hillary Clinton lesson: That a woman can’t win. And I think it’s sad .” Ah, yes—“the Hillary Clinton lesson.” Sad, but true. It is a fundamentally flawed and faulty premise that women can’t win as Presidential nominees which I hope we as Democrats work strenuously to overcome and kill once and for all in the next 4 years. Not just for Harris, but for all female nominees and political candidates at every level of government. FYI—they do drill down to discuss major issues and how voters rate VP Harris on them. The poll and the article are chock-full of details and numbers on voters’ views. In the interest of respecting fair use rules, I’m limiting how much of the article I’m quoting here. Note that there are 3 charts/tables in the article that make the data easier to read which I’ve left off in respect of fair use rules. Here is how voters ranked several potential 2028 Democratic candidates… Harris, at 41% among Democratic voters, was way out ahead in a hypothetical 2028 matchup between several other figures in the party : Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg (15%), California Gov. Gavin Newsom (14%), Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer (5%), Arizona Sen. Mark Kelly (4%) and Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro (2%). 17% of Democrats didn’t know or had no opinion. Among all voters, Harris led with 21% , followed by Buttigieg and Newsom (10%), Whitmer and Kelly (4%) and Shapiro (3%). >SNIP< The poll surveyed 3,996 registered voters from May 28-29 and has a margin of error of 2 percentage points. I don’t know an exact number of times one can quote portions of an article. But I am being a bit cautious about quoting any further from this analysis. It’s not excessively long, but it is lengthy. It is also one of the fairer and more evenhanded commentaries on VP Harris and it goes into noteworthy details on exact poll numbers. That includes how her poll numbers with Hispanic voters, young Black voters, and Black women are all higher than President Biden’s. Yes, I am very well-aware we are still 4 years away from 2028. However, given how often DK members like to speculate on the future of various Democrats in office, these detailed numbers and observations on candidates, voter perceptions and issues like “reproductive rights, inclusion, upward mobility and climate change” should prove useful, insightful and hopefully helpful. Most important of all, my greatest hope is that women continue to run for higher office and that the toxic “Hillary Clinton lesson” will go extinct much sooner than later.
