Ross Douthat Fails To Press J. D. Vance On Peter Thiel-Leonard Leo Radical Libertarianism [1]

This interview is a major fail.

New York Times columnist Ross Douthat has an interview in today’s paper with Senator J.D Vance (R-OH).

Both Douthat and Vance are both conservative converts to Catholicism. Their overlapping takes on Church, cultural and economic issues that are often at odds with progressive-thinking Catholics such as myself.

But what should concern the Grey Lady’s readers – or anyone else concerned about the fragile state of American democracy – are a few critical questions Douthat failed to press the Buckeye State senator on but failed to do so.

For example, Douthat does not query about J.D. Vance's close relationship with uber-libertarian Peter Thiel? Thiel has openly made his anti-democracy sentiments well known.

Thiel, in turn, has been working closely with Federalist Society’s and Opus Dei’s Leonard Leo on spreading destructive libertarian economic polices.

Nor did Douthat press how Vance can square his libertarian economic views (as well of those of Leo and Thiel) with Catholic social teaching such as distributive justice and a living wage?

My hunch is that Vance can’t go there without clanging the alarm bells of American democracy.

Major fail Ross. Major fail.
