Throwback Thursdays: 1994-‘95 Major League Baseball Strike [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2024-06-13 Thirty years ago, the Major League Baseball Players Association agreed to go on strike. August 12, 1994 was when the strike started and April 2, 1995 is when the strike concluded, 232 days later. A previous collective bargaining agreement had expired on December 31, 1993. At that time there was no signing of a new agreement. In a nutshell, the strike todo all revolved around a salary cap and revenue sharing as proposed by team owners. The players balked. 1994 was the only year since I’ve been alive (I was born in March 1953) that the major leaguers hadn’t had a World Series competition. The last year such a championship had not been held prior to the ‘94 strike, was in 1904. Over time, and for a time, the rift between the owners and players seemed to only worsen. It was anyone’s guess as to whether the two sides would ever see eye to eye and resolve their differences. The battle had become both a fierce and protracted one. The fans, for whom the game was intended, were the ones who really lost out, in my opinion. Many were left wondering whether there would even be a next season. As an adjunct, fans are what matters most here. To the entertainment professional, the fan base means everything. Lose that and say “good-bye livelihood”. Meanwhile, apparently done in an attempt to appease the true-blue diehard fans who occupied the seats in the stands, replacements were brought in to substitute in the real big-leaguers’ places. But it was to little or no avail, apparently, the damage having already been done. The fans were fast to recognize that, even with the subs, it just wasn’t the same. It’s a time in professional baseball history specifically, and pro-sports history generally, that I believe most people would just as soon forget. Meanwhile, if there’s something you’d like to see covered in the Throwback Thursdays diary, just pitch the idea in comments and I’ll take it from there. I’m always open to suggestions.
