Breathing Shouldn't be a Privilege [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2024-06-14 Breathing just got a lot easier for people like me who live with asthma. Thanks to efforts from the Biden administration, as of June 1, the cost of most inhalers is capped at $35. Sometimes, as Democrats, we are so focused on how things can continue to improve that we forget to celebrate the wins. Breathing shouldn't be a privilege in this country, which is a significant step in the right direction. Breathing shouldn't be a privilege in this country, period. Breathing shouldn't be a privilege in this country, period. Although we certainly have our work cut out for us, celebrating the progress that we have made shows that systemic change is possible. This belief in the possibility of a better future is why I am running for the Florida Statehouse this year. There is still MUCH work to be done. Florida is one of only ten states that have yet to expand Medicaid, leaving working-class families who earn too much to qualify for Medicaid yet not enough to qualify for an Affordable Care Act subsidy largely uninsured. Readily available federal dollars are on the table to fund Medicaid expansion. However, Governor DeSantis refuses to accept the funds. Whereas the DeSantis administration and the extremist state legislature make cruel attempts to limit access to healthcare by taking actions intended to weaken the Affordable Care Act and illegally strip vulnerable children from Medicaid, Democrats are fighting for access to high-quality and affordable healthcare for all. It is hardly a secret that the U.S. healthcare system is broken at every level. Exorbitantly priced medications in the U.S., more often than not, cost a mere fraction in other countries for the same exact drug. Moreover, affordable access to medications is not only the ethical thing to do, but it also saves money in the long run, as when people living with chronic conditions such as asthma and diabetes can afford medications like inhalers and insulin, they are far less likely to need emergency medical care, which is far more costly in the long run. However, we must do more to get the message out to voters, making it clear who is fighting for them and what progress has been made due to these efforts.
