[1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2024-06-14 20 years ago, driving into Lake County, Florida, you took country roads and watched out for wildlife crossing the road. Nature bordered your path back home, escaping the traffic and overcrowding of adjacent counties, inhaling deeply as you ended your day of work, errands, and appointments. When I moved here I felt like I was home with the area’s New England feel and southern charm. Then came that inevitable beast — growth. Now our roads are wider and the cow pastures are thinner. There are torn-down small patches of nature like the one pictured above, replaced with big gates welcoming you into big developments with big houses, and big fees for the rest of the county. This is what’s happening in Lake County. And it ain’t good. Lake County, Florida, has over 1400 lakes; many have algae blooms and are contaminated with pollutants. Runoff from roads, fertilizers of the ever-ending lawns, and toxins in general are finding ways into our waters and the Florida aquifer. This impacts our tourists and residents who want to enjoy the lakes and natural resources in the area. This impacts our businesses and our revenues. And that ain’t good. The county and cities allow high-density communities to pop up anywhere developers set their eyes on. They come in and build in areas that are far away from employment, schooling, and shopping areas but close enough to wildlife to scream when a bear is seen scavaging through an open garbage can because it can’t find food in an area that once was abundant with it. So an amendment has to be put on the 2024 ballot to make sure that “wildlife” is “controlled”. Amendment 2...it ain’t good! Lake County, Florida, must get smart. Smart in its growth. Smart in its legislation. Smart for its citizens. Our county needs leaders who know that growth is inevitable but must be balanced with a protected and healthy natural environment.
