Street Prophets Friday: Garden Updates and Oddities [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2024-06-14 Hello out there, in here and to those still working their way through the membrane. I've been bopping back and forth to my little gardening spot and I've got a few photos to share. There might be a bit of added fluff, but nothing too itchy. The weather in Europe continues to be odd and finding oddities in the garden is becoming something to be expected. A month ago the news was full of frozen orchards and farmers mourning the loss of their apple crop for the year. It looks like we won't have any cherries or walnuts, but our apples seem to have escaped the worst of the frost damage. However, our apple trees are still behaving oddly. An already well-developed apple— while further down the same branch there are newly opened blossoms. In general, it’s a period of rapid growth in the garden. The pumpkin plants have more than tripled in size in less than a week. Last weekend Yesterday— already a flower! Already crawling out of their cage The Black Currants don't have their act together yet The rhubarb is starting to produce another round of leaves, the onions are doing well, harvested another handful of radishes ... Not much going on in my odd little A-frame. The herbs are doing great! The honeybees are particularly happy with the sage plants I put in last year The potatoes are finally working their way through the grass clippings Had a meal's worth of peapods from the garden. Made a nice stir-fry with them, a bit of pork, cabbage, ginger, garlic, sweet peppers, green onion, Vietnamese Coriander, light soy sauce ... I wasn't imagining things— we do have half a dozen tiny tomatoes Ah, wild strawberries! And the few regular strawberry plants in the garden are also producing the occasional fruit. The plants in the garden are the descendants of extra strawberry plants that our neighbor gave us over 20 years ago. Meanwhile, out in the barn ... Out collecting a wheelbarrow full of split firewood ... A mushroom! It's a delicious variety that we're also finding out in the yard under our birch trees. But, growing in the barn? Thanks for stopping by.
