More Problems With the Boeing 737 Max [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2024-06-15 This seems to have emerged in the news about a day ago, although the incident happened about 3 weeks ago. Because “plane lands safely” is NEVER a headline, we wait for the drips to collect in a big enough puddle to be noticed… CNN: 737 Max Goes into "Dutch Roll" So we now have a case where I would guess a 737 Max has gone haywire (or maybe the pilots were irresponsible, but that is difficult to imagine) in the 2 other flight dimensions as opposed to the crashes several years back that exposed the charade of certifying this “variation” on an accepted design1. It was cutting corners to start with...cost lives. And since then the litany of Boeing issues include doors popping off planes in flight2 and a leaking spacecraft stuck in low orbit3...and other recent ominous news that affects not only Boeing4. And planes dropping to withing a few hundred feet of the ocean5. Good work, ladies and gentlemen! It might be time for Boeing to the way of Pan Am. It’s also time to change the certification process to be more concerned with safety than profit. Opps, there I go again...people over profits. When will I ever learn? ****** 1 — there are three flight dimensions — pitch is the up and down motion of the nose of the plane (this was the problem that Boeing slipped in their secret pitch adjustment program that killed 346 people in 2 crashes...); roll is the up and down motions of the wing tips; yaw is the side to side motion of the tail. A Ducth Roll is a simultaneous oscillation of the wing tips and tail motion — a combination of roll and yaw. Air frames need to have aerobatic design to safely perform this maneuver. 2 — Earlier this year, ICYMI 3 — Starliner leaks "minor" - are there any "minor" problems in space? 4 — As pointed out by B-Sides — there are apparent supply chain issues with counterfeit titanium 5 — ANOTHER H/T to B-Sides — although I do remember hearing about this briefly yesterday...just didn’t process it was another 737 Max...
