The Bloodstains on White Marble Steps 70 Years Later Will Be All-Too-Real [1]

This time the headline would be accurate. Call them the "Bloodbath Six"

Exactly seventy years and four weeks after the Supreme Court unanimously did the unmistakably right thing against racism in the Brown v. Board of Education decision, the six rightwing members of the current court have done the unambiguously wrong thing in promotion of violence and chaos in the Garland v. Cargill case.

I was immediately reminded of an infamous front-page editorial in the Jackson Daily News on May 18, 1954, the day after the Brown decision.

The staunchly segregationist paper predicted that the school segregation decision would lead to violence. The scarcely veiled purpose of this statement was to incite white thugs to react with violence. Donald Trump and those around him today obviously to have the same intent when they predict massive violence if he is not elected.

In encouraging violence seven decades ago, the editors of the Mississippi paper preemptively blamed it on the Supreme Court for doing the right thing:

“Human blood may stain Southern soil in many places because of this decision but the dark red stains of that blood will be on the marble steps of the United States Supreme Court building. White and Negro children in the same schools will lead to miscegenation. Miscegenation leads to mixed marriages and mixed marriages lead to mongrelization of the human race.”

This time, though, there can be little question that there will be bloodshed—probably massive bloodshed—as a result of the Court’s doing the outrageously wrong thing.

Those coming bloodstains—bloodbaths—as hundreds of bullets spray from submachine guns on our streets, at concerts, clubs, in schools, and so on, will rightly be on the marble steps of the United States Supreme Court.

Shame is not a strong enough word for what the Bloodbath Six have done.
