The words “own research” collide with climate catastrophe [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2024-06-16 The headline from BBC is How a Kenyan farmer became a champion of climate change denial It is a reasonably short read but the main points are this. “Kenyan farmer Jusper Machogu… has become known as a flag bearer for fossil fuels in Africa, but there is more to his campaign than meets the eye.” The 29 year old farmer finds time between weeding and planting and picking to post videos using hashtag #ClimateScam. According to BBC, a direct quote from him is “Climate change is mostly natural. A warmer climate is good for life,”. And I get it, to some degree. Africa and the Global South have some legitimate complaints that the Global North has messed everything up and lied and cheated into wealth, hypocritically. Machogu posted “We need fossil fuels to develop our Africa,” Sure. Short term thinking for short term lifts from poverty that will insure longer term climate destruction. But Machogu has 25,000+ followers on X. Yet, BBC thinks that most of these followers are from the US, the UK, and Canada. So naturally this negative feed back loop has donations as well. BBC reports that fundraising pages set up by Machogu have raised more than $9,000 from donations in the last two years, some of which he has shared with neighbors. But this is what got me to thinking. “Mr Machogu began tweeting false and misleading claims about climate change in late 2021, after carrying out his “own research” into the topic.” Perhaps the word research needs to be better defined for some people. It certainly does not mean going to FaceBook University. Research beyond reading and observation means experiments with control groups and the like. The plural of anecdote is data. Sample sizes need be LARGE. And the current data we have on climate right now is proof of only going to get worse. You can read the full article for yourself. It does end with this. “That is really, really dangerous.” [END] --- [1] Url: https://www.dailykos.com/stories/2024/6/16/2246954/-The-words-own-research-collide-with-climate-catastrophe?pm_campaign=front_page&pm_source=trending&pm_medium=web Published and (C) by Daily Kos Content appears here under this condition or license: Site content may be used for any purpose without permission unless otherwise specified. via Magical.Fish Gopher News Feeds: gopher://magical.fish/1/feeds/news/dailykos/
