[1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2024-06-17 My mother is in her 80s and is desirous to age in place at home. She requires full time help and we have found one day time caregiver for Mon-Thu for her who has been fantastic. We had another caregiver for the F-Sun weekend who was not that great, and she eventually left. The problem now is that we have had multiple people willing to take the weekend job, but want to work under the table in order to keep their CA health care benefits. We’ve been trying to hire at a competitive rate of $25-$27 per hour for basic companion care. Multiple people have interviewed and wanted the job, but at the point of hiring, have balked at becoming an employee with all their SS and contributions paid, reported. They want to work under the table. One person offered to take the job if we paid them $13/hour (which is illegal in CA btw). It seems infuriating that people accepting what amounts to a part time job find themselves in danger of losing their benefits, while at the same time, people who make over $160,000 per year are then excused from paying anything beyond that amount to compute their obligation in taxes. In the torrid discussions about this issue we’ve had in the family, I’ve also had to hear that it is unions who have caused this wage rise. If so, GOOD. But the fact is, there’s a disconnect with reality and a genuine issue of low wage/salary workers faced with a terrible choice. How can this be fixed?
