New Poll Shows Conviction was Bad for Trump - and Shows How to Make it Worse [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2024-06-17 Politico has published a new poll they ran with Ipsos, claiming it’s the first poll to show the impact of TCF&FG (the convicted felon and former guy)’s 34 guilty verdicts. It has some bad (and some not so bad) news for the Orange Hairball, and some guidelines on how to make things worse. New Polling Shows the Real Fallout From the Trump Conviction First, the bad (for TCF&FG, that is) news: Among the most notable findings in our poll: 21 percent of independents said the conviction made them less likely to support Trump and that it would be an important factor in their vote. In a close election, small shifts among independent and swing voters could determine the outcome. Minor (well, major) digression: The 34 for 45 isn’t the only thing we have on him. Abortion has been a major disaster for Republicans since Dobbs, and while Trump seems to know that, he can’t do much about it without alienating one part or another of his base. This is a multi-front war and all weapons have been summoned to combat. Now, the not-so-bad news: A sizable number of Americans, including independents, question whether the verdict was the result of a fair and impartial process. And although most respondents rejected the idea that the prosecution was brought to help President Joe Biden, a large number (43 percent of all respondents) either strongly or somewhat agreed that was the rationale for the case. But the poll also hints at events that may counter this trend: The recent conviction of Hunter Biden on gun charges and a scheduled trial in September on tax charges could also influence Americans’ perceptions, particularly since those cases dramatically undermine Trump and Republicans’ claims that the former president has been the victim of a “weaponized” Justice Department. And indeed, Republicans who had been screaming loudly about how the fix was in for Hunter suddenly went very quiet when it turned out not to have been fixed at all. In fact, if there was any “fixing” done, it was in the other direction — as at least one of the jurors openly acknowledged: Hunter Biden juror calls trial 'waste of taxpayers' dollars,' says texts were key evidence. And then there’s former Rep. Trey Gowdy, not exactly any kind of liberal, saying this: Trey Gowdy, a former federal prosecutor and Republican member of Congress, recently argued on Fox News that the case was dubious and wouldn’t have been brought “if this were Hunter Jones or Hunter Smith.” Gowdy noted that cases of prosecuting drug users for lying on forms are extremely rare. So right there is some ammunition to counter the questioning of the Trump verdict, if played right. Then there is this interesting finding from Politico: But the least trusted actors in the legal system are not the lawyers prosecuting or defending the cases, or even the kind of state judges presiding over Trump’s case. They are the Supreme Court justices themselves, whose public approval has taken a considerable hit in recent years thanks to unpopular rulings issued by the conservative supermajority and a series of rolling ethical controversies involving Republican appointees Samuel Alito and Clarence Thomas. This suggests a plan of attack: The justice system is working at the trial level. Where it isn’t working is at the Supreme Court — because Trump and his cronies corrupted it. You want to restore trust to the justice system in our country? Start by re-electing Joe Biden and keeping Trump and his cronies from corrupting it any further. The Biden campaign is already on it: Biden warns of more Trump Supreme Court picks. Let’s go, Dark Brandon!
