Whether it be in a pool, river, lake, ocean, hot tub, what-have-you, seems to matter not. Okay, maybe not a hot tub. Harking back, my family once enjoyed membership at a local country club. On club grounds, there was an 18-hole golf course, multiple tennis courts and a pretty good-sized swimming pool: What I will call your three basic country club enticements. Swimming was my thing. In fact, I had zero interest in playing tennis or golf. They just weren’t my bag, if you will. I was high-school age and among a then relatively rare few who wore long hair. Well, certainly not our intent, but me and this other long-hair, caused quite a kerfuffle by our being able to swim all the while being exempt from having to don a bathing cap, in contrast to what was required of members of the opposite gender, at least, up to that time, anyhow. Management, apparently, wasn’t keen on the idea of hair getting stuck in and plugging pool drains which would then necessitate cleaning. It fast became evident by the many in witness that us two male “long-locks” types could swim and not be bound by the same requirements, in that we could swim bathing-cap-less, well, it didn’t take a rocket scientist to see where this was headed. I’m sure the club powers that be convened a meeting to discuss and come up with a resolution, although I don’t really know this to be absolute. But it would make sense. Well, the long and short of it (sorry, I couldn’t resist) was that wearing a quote-unquote bathing cap became a decision left to the individual swimmer to make. Having to wear a bathing cap from then on was no longer mandatory. A rare occasion in my life where my upsetting the status quo produced a favorable outcome. A win if ever there was one and then some!
