Cheers and Jeers for Tuesday, June 18, 2024 Note: Today is International Sushi Day. By all means celebrate it to your belly’s content. I’m afraid I can’t. The memory of last year’s Sushi Day is still too raw. - By the Numbers: 4 days!!! Days 'til summer: 2 Days 'til the annual Taste of Highlands in New Jersey: 4 Amount raised From the Biden-Harris all-star fundraiser featuring Barack Obama, George Clooney and Julia Roberts: $30 million Rank of President Biden's record on private job creation (14 million) after 40 months in office, among the last 12 presidential terms, i.e. Carter through Biden: #1 Rank of Trump: #12 Year the children's book Ban This Book was released, seven years before the Indian River County, Florida school district banned it over the objections of its own review committee: 2017 Age of journalist-pundit Howard Fineman when he died last week: 75 NBA Finals Boston beats Dallas 4 games to 1 to win the championship. - Puppy Pic of the Day: Hello, up there… - CHEERS to good news wherever we can find it. The media thrives on bad news ("If it bleeds it leads" is their golden rule), but if we carefully navigate through the doom and dread, there are nuggets to tickle the endorphins. Such as… Taxing the Rich The IRS plans to end a major tax loophole for wealthy taxpayers that could raise more than $50 billion in revenue over the next decade, the U.S. Treasury Department says. The guidance and ruling being announced Monday includes plans to essentially stop “partnership basis shifting"—a process by which a business or person can move assets among a series of related parties to avoid paying taxes. Protecting Kids The U.S. surgeon general called on Monday for social media platforms to include health warnings for younger users. “It is time to require a surgeon general’s warning label on social media platforms, stating that social media is associated with significant mental health harms for adolescents,” Vivek H. Murthy wrote in an op-ed published in The New York Times. The War on the War on Pot Maryland Gov. Wes Moore pardoned more than175,000 marijuana convictions Monday in a sweeping executive order. The governor will pardon misdemeanor charges for people who were found guilty of possessing small amounts of marijuana. Immigrant Power…ACTIVATE!!! Immigration—both authorized and unauthorized—has helped the U.S. job market sustain a fiery run in recent months without reigniting inflation, economists and analysts say. [They] also credited immigration with helping the United States maintain a positive GDP. … In short, immigrants may be safeguarding the U.S. economic recovery. There. Now be happy. Or else. JEERS to getting dunked in the deep fryer. The tiny fishing hamlet of Portland, Maine was really spoiled last summer as the temperature failed to reach 90 even once. After a perfectly cool and pleasant spring (I'm wearing a sweatshirt as I write this), all that is about to change. Seems somebody up here poked God with the Satan stick and our punishment is getting a little taste of Beelzebub's own medicine: While we're escaping the worst of the "Heat Dome," inland Mainers are really gonna cook, with heat indexes over 100. Unfortunately, they have to stay where they are because if they all rush to the coast to cool off, the sudden weight shift will tilt the state and gravity will cause the heat to slide in our direction, evaporating the ocean and destroying the planet. Hey, don’t give me that look. Meteorological science is a cruel master. JEERS to tales from America's dark ages. Another reminder that we used to be, in certain ways, as backward as any nation that ever was. On this date in 1873—ah, those wacky Grant years—Susan B. Anthony was fined a hundred dollars for the unpardonable offense of voting (in Rochester, New York). On the day of her sentencing, Anthony was asked by Hunt whether she had anything to say. Susan’s gravestone is covered with “I Voted” stickers every November. “Yes, your honor, I have many things to say; for in your ordered verdict of guilty, you have trampled underfoot every vital principle of our government,” Anthony said. “My natural rights, my civil rights, my political rights, my judicial rights, are all alike ignored. Robbed of the fundamental privilege of citizenship, I am degraded from the status of a citizen to that of a subject; and not only myself individually, but all of my sex, are, by your honor’s verdict, doomed to political subjection under this, so-called, form of government.” The dust-up led to immediate reforms. Unfortunately, back in those days "immediate reform" meant waiting another fifty years before doing anything about it. By the way, Ms. Anthony never paid the fine. As of last year her heirs owed the Fed, with interest—[clackity clackity clack DING!]—nine million dollars. But with the way women blocked a second term for the grotesque orange man who lived in the White House, we were happy to accidentally trip and drop the bill in the paper shredder. Clumsy us. - BRIEF SANITY BREAK - - END BRIEF SANITY BREAK - CHEERS to Ride's ride. 41 years ago today, strapped inside the Space Shuttle Challenger, Sally Ride became the first American woman (and, we later found out, first lesbian) in space. (The first woman in space from any country was Russia's Valentina Tereshkova in 1963—boy, did we get scooped on that.) For a brief moment I thought she was smokin’ a butt in space. (Memo to self: schedule eye exam.) The flight was momentarily delayed when she made the men on the crew pick up their old pad Thai take-out boxes and dirty underwear. Even worse, she hid the TV remote and flushed the porn. Now, that's just cruel. JEERS to historic vanishing acts. Over in Israel, Benjamin Netanyahu says he dissolved his war cabinet. Thus bringing to a tragic end the first documented test of a Jewish space laser. (Free words of advice to Marjorie Taylor Greene: lay low for awhile.) - Ten years ago in C&J: June 18, 2014 JEERS to armchair quarterback hawks. Republican draft-dodger Mitt Romney said on a Sunday morning show that neither President Obama nor Hillary Clinton have protected America. When it was pointed out that, unlike the previous administration, America hasn't been attacked on Obama's watch, Romney said, "Yes, but the way it hasn't been attacked is totally irresponsible and it's Obama and Clinton's fault that we haven't been attacked in the way we otherwise wouldn't have been attacked." Responded Democrats: "Run Mitt, run." - And just one more… CHEERS to U.S. Mint'y freshness. The new American Women Quarter is here! The new American Women Quarter is here! Yes indeed, the latest in the series of U.S. quarters celebrating accomplished American women (BTW, Sally Ride got hers in 2022.) was released, and she's a MAGA cultist's nightmare: a woman who thought it might be a good idea if women were equal to men: Dr. Mary Edwards Walker was a Civil War era surgeon, and a women’s rights and dress reform advocate. She’s the only woman to be awarded the Medal of Honor. Mary Edwards Walker was born in Oswego, New York to parents that encouraged her to think freely. They allowed her to wear “bloomer” pants instead of skirts and corsets. Walker graduated from Syracuse Medical College in 1855. … When the Civil War began in 1861, Walker wanted to join the Union’s efforts, but she was not allowed to serve as an army medical officer because she was a woman. Instead, she served as an unpaid volunteer surgeon at the U.S. Patent Office Hospital in Washington, DC. A year later she went to Virginia to treat wounded soldiers near the front lines. In 1863, the Army finally accepted her request to practice as a surgeon and commissioned her as a “Contract Acting Assistant Surgeon (civilian)”. She became the first woman to serve as a U.S. Army surgeon. Walker often crossed battle lines to care for wounded soldiers. Walker opposed society’s expectations of traditional women’s dress codes and often wore “men’s” clothing because she found this attire more practical, comfortable, and sanitary. More on Dr. Walker here at the National Women’s History Museum. Hmm...a woman Army surgeon who won the Medal of Honor. I’m curious, Mr. trump...would that make her a loser or a sucker? Have a tolerable Tuesday. Floor's open...What are you cheering and jeering about today? - Today's Shameless C&J Testimonial Joe Biden is a person who answers his phone every time Bill in Portland Maine calls. Any time. Doesn’t matter what’s going on." —Jen Psaki - [END] --- [1] Url: https://www.dailykos.com/stories/2024/6/18/2246995/-Cheers-and-Jeers-Tuesday?pm_campaign=front_page&pm_source=trending&pm_medium=web Published and (C) by Daily Kos Content appears here under this condition or license: Site content may be used for any purpose without permission unless otherwise specified. via Magical.Fish Gopher News Feeds: gopher://magical.fish/1/feeds/news/dailykos/
