Is Georgia A Swing State in 2024? [1]

Short answer is Yes and No. First though, some data.

Georgia Voters (2020 General Election from Georgia Secretary of State data)

Number of Voters by Age Percentage of votes from that Age Group

18-24: 194,140 18-24: (see 24-29 below)

24-29: 192,935 24-29: 9.7% (total of 18-24 and 24-29 vote)

30-39: 512,371 30-39: 12.9%

40-49: 636,050 40-49: 16%

50-59: 798,957 50-59: 20.1%

60-69: 804,240 60-69: 20.2%

70-79: 576,106 70-79: 14.5%

80+: 234,242 80+: 5.9%

The top 4 voting groups in GA in 2020 were (in order) 60-69, 50-59, 40-49, and 70-79. The top 2 largest age groups in Ga in 2020 were 20-29 and 30-39 (and both lean significantly Democrat by double digit percentages over Republicans). Imagine if 18 to 39 year olds came out to vote in larger numbers. Georgia is only a swing state because younger voters do not come out and vote. Change that and Georgia becomes a solid Blue state. conversely...well you know that part.

Nationally the 18-29 age group leans 33% more Dem than Repub. And the 30-39 age group leans 14% more Dem than Repub (Pew Research). Same Age Groups in Georgia favored Biden by 13 and 8 percent respectively in 2020. These are also the largest two age groups in Georgia. As the above data shows, the two largest age groups did not show up in large numbers to vote in 2020 Georgia. They accounted for only 22.6% of the total vote.

CNN exit polling of the 2020 election in GA shows us that the 18-29 age group went for Biden by 56% over Trump's 43%. And that the 30-39 age group went to Biden by 53% over Trump's 45%. That tells us that even though the older voters showed up in greater numbers, the larger population advantage of the younger voters and their decided preference for Dems tilted the election to Biden - Biden won by 11,779 votes.

I note this only to urge those younger age groups to show up in far greater numbers in 2024. You have the numerical advantage if you show up. If you want Democrat policies, VOTE. And VOTE in the numbers that your elders can't match. Get that vote total up to 35% of the vote for 18-39 year olds. Because you have that advantage. Your time has come. You need only register to vote and walk into a voting booth and mark your ballot. Have fun.
