Bolly and the Bridge [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2024-06-18 ____________________________________________________ Bolly and the Bridge It wasn’t often Bolly faced having to decide to cross a formidable bridge. There were old trees laid across a rain soaked ditch here and there, and sometimes a few stubborn stones might get you across a puny creek. Here he was though, and there was no getting around it — a bridge. To cross. He decided to clear a space in some bushes —lilacs— close by, to wait and see who might come along, either way. And there, Morpheus awaited. It was late afternoon when a chorus of birds started up, and surely, well yes surely nobody had gone by on the bridge, either way. Nobody you’d notice. So he walked across the bridge and chose to get off the road, who wouldn’t? and so followed a narrow path that led along, it was an inviting path, to a shambling farmhouse. He paused to dust off, twice. He introduced himself, being polite, and was invited to supper. This was good. Every meal is really supper, but supper it really was. Proper bread, something good in a bowl. A mug or two of home brew. Then they asked if he’d been around by the bridge? Bolly nodded. Did you see anybody, did anybody see you? He shook his head. Now they offered to let him sleep in the haystack, and he thanked them, and so goodnight. But as he walked over to some very inviting looking hay — you could burrow in there and well, just well that would be as nice as you might ask for. Or maybe not. Then he saw the rising moon. He chose his direction to where it would set and gave a tug on his unusual hat, which it was, unusual, and headed away. He was rested and fed and his shadow, though he was stretching his legs as he walked, easy long strides, his shadow kept pace with him. He was sleepwalking before morning, if it was sleep. Sunrise.
