[1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2024-06-18 The Fourth of July is just a couple weeks away, which is a reminder of another, rarely mentioned consequence of this presidential race: Whoever is elected president in November will preside over the 250th anniversary of America’s founding—the nation’s semiquincentennial—on July 4, 2026. Of all the reasons to vote for Joe Biden, this is probably No. 478 on the list, and yet I find it somehow compelling. America’s semiquincentennial will be an extraordinary milestone in our nation’s history—and indeed, in the history of the world. Yet it’s hard to imagine a darker, bleaker “celebration” than one led by a deeply immoral convicted felon, seditionist, serial sexual predator, and wannabe dictator. The vibe would be like celebrating your 30th birthday with your emotionally abusive stepfather. As unthinkable as that prospect may be, one person who is thinking about it is Trump. He already released a video last year (I haven’t had the stomach to watch it; the link is to a story about it) calling for a yearlong 250th celebration lasting from Memorial Day 2025 through July 4, 2026 (which he no doubt imagines as a yearlong celebration of him). If nothing else, think of the celebrities who would take part in that historic event. Under Biden, we might get Beyonce and Taylor Swift. Under Trump, it would be Kid Rock and the Muskogee, Oklahoma, High School marching band. Of course, there’s a good chance that a theoretical President Trump would already be impeached and convicted of something by the summer of 2026, but would a celebration with President J.D. Vance be any less miserable? America deserves a real celebration of American democracy, led by a president who actually believes in democracy. We should commemorate the 250 years since our nation’s founding with a good and decent leader who, by 2026, will have served his country honorably in elective office for one-fifth of America’s history.
