Diabetes: Islet Cells from Stem Cells [1]

We hear a fair amount about using islet cells from stem cells to treat T1D, but here is a promising path for treating some very serious T2D cases. This is only one case, so we will need to watch for actual clinical trials and so on.

Cell Discovery research letter:

Treating a type 2 diabetic patient with impaired pancreatic islet function by personalized endoderm stem cell-derived islet tissue

Here, we report the intrahepatic implantation of islet tissue (E-islets) differentiated in vitro from autologous EnSCs in a T2D patient who had impaired insulin secretion. This is a pilot study of an investigator-initiated trial designed to investigate the safety and efficacy of E-islets for the treatment of insulin-dependent diabetic patients.

The patient was in serious condition, having had diabetic nephropathy leading to kidney transplantation, and daily hyperglycemic and hypoglycemic episodes.
