Kitchen Table Kibitzing: Tipping Etiquette [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2024-06-20 I don’t think I’m alone in being confounded on how to handle these new bill paying options which ask what percentage of a tip I want to leave in situations where traditionally I had not tipped before. For example, it used to be that you don’t have to tip the owner of a business. Apparently, that’s no longer the way things go. Case in point: My hairdresser. For years, I didn’t tip my hairdresser, who owns the business. That was until she invested in one of those tablets which asks you for a tip. She’d be sitting there right in front of me as the screen came up so she would know if I opted out of tipping her. When I raised the issue with her, she said that’s not the case anymore. That most of her clients leave her a tip. I thought I had found a solution to the problem when I started using Venmo to pay her, at least I didn’t feel pressured to tip her. But then she raised her prices for me and not for a friend of mine who has quite the head of hair and has highlights done and pays $10 less than I do. And I’ve run across other the same problem in grocery stores, self checkout lines, and other instances in which I’m not accustomed to tipping. Not only that but the tip percentage has increased dramatically. It used to be that 20% was my standard tip but now I see screens asking for as much as 40%. An NPR story What is the new etiquette for tipping? discusses the new rules for tipping and explores how you should handle the problem of tipping in a situation in which you are not accustomed to leaving a tip. The story cites a 2023 Pew Research survey of nearly 12,000 adults in the U.S which found over 79% of people surveyed said they were being asked to leave gratuities much more than in the past. About1/3 said it was easy to determine when and what to tip. The article suggests asking the person who is serving you the following questions: What is the minimum and subminimum wage in your state? If the subminimum wage is low, your tip will help the employee make a livable wage. If there is no subminimum wage, tips are actually gratuity. If the subminimum wage is low, your tip will help the employee make a livable wage. If there is no subminimum wage, tips are actually gratuity. Do you keep your whole tip? Some payment systems take a portion of the tip, so that may be a factor in how much you decide to leave behind. Some payment systems take a portion of the tip, so that may be a factor in how much you decide to leave behind. How can I make sure you're getting my tip? Some businesses might not be tipping the person you think your money's going to.
