Vietnam Veteran remembers Donald Sutherland [1]

I don’t have a photo. In 1969 I enlisted in the US Army, Basic Training at Fort Ord, California then off to Fort Rucker, Alabama, followed by a tour in Vietnam where I was part of the War on Vietnam. While there I saw an ad in Playboy magazine that a flag covered coffin and it gave the number of American troops that had been killed in the War on Vietnam.

Hugh Hefner ran the ad for Vietnam Veterans Against the War, I mailed in the coupon and couple weeks later I my membership card arrived. I still have that card. Once stateside I became active in the anti-war movement, attending many protest, arrested a few times, head busted up and was lucky to spend time with Ron Kovic, Born on the 4th of July fame.

I was invited to a FTA (Fuck The Army] fund raiser at a rich Hollywood liberals home, and the guest speakers were Jane Fonda and Donald Sutherland. I was the only Vietnam Veteran at the gathering and was pretty much dissed by Fonda but Sutherland spent a great amount of time talking with me asking questions about my time in Vietnam. Just before the stars left I gave him a hit of paper acid told him the flavor he thanked me no idea if he ever took it, but shortly after I took one and the drive out of Hollyweird was surreal for sure.

That all said, thank you Donald Sutherland for treating me like a friend when you could see I was very much out of place. 88 years you done good buddy.
