Daily Bucket:Friday Sequence;Great Blue Heron juveniles in the nest, Open Thread [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2024-06-21 I’ll admit I let this Friday Bucket go until the very last minute. I have wanted to keep the Friday Sequence going but life has brought new challenges and opportunities. I’m not sure of the future of Friday Sequences, at least not with me as the lead organizer, but here’s a post to keep the ball rolling for a bit longer. On June 16th, I checked on the Great Blue Heron nest at Commodore Park. There are over 60 nests there. It is a noisy, busy place with young Great Blue Heron starting to branch, soon to fledge. The photos here will give you an idea of the dueling that the young engage in with each other, how much room they take up in the nest and how they look on their way to adulthood. I look forward to reading the comments on what others are up to today. Early GBH young learning to balance, just starting to branch away from nest. Lots of flapping, but finally, both feet attached. Beak play seems to be a big part of growing up. Even though the same size, the young GBH have different postures that make it look like some are much larger. Just hanging out, looking around and waiting for food. Not much room when they get bigger. When they start strengthening wings by flapping, the others have to duck. The wing feathers in development. You can see the sheaths that the feathers are growing from. Not enough to fly quite yet, but soon. This Bucket isn’t quite ready to fledge yet. It needs your added comments to fully take off on its own. Please share something going on in your life.
