Street Prophets Friday: A Brief Stay in Liberec (photo diary) [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2024-06-21 I'm not feeling terribly fluffy today. Too much going on, gearing up for a summer adventure. Still a few last minute projects needing my attention. But I will toss a quick diary at you and give you a place to romp and strut and frolic. Last weekend we finally made the relatively short trip north to the city of Liberec and spent some time with some old friends. We and a group of mutual friends, plus our locals, all met at a restaurant on the southern edge of Liberec for lunch and, after overwhelming the kitchen with our orders and waiting for me to finish, moved on to our friends’ little house, almost more of a hut, that they have out in a suburb of Liberec. It's quite common for people with an apartment in the cities of the Czech Republic to have a little garden plot somewhere. There's usually some sort of permanent structure tucked in a corner. It might be a tiny garden shed, it might be a four bedroom, two-story house with an outdoor pool. Permanent residence is technically illegal in these garden colonies. Our friends may spend a lot of time at their garden, but they don't live there. They have running water and a chemical toilet. They have two rooms downstairs and a large sort of attic with mattresses spread over the floor for they to sleep on. After dropping off our bags we went for a walk. We hiked up to the top of a nearby hill where there was a lookout tower. A thirsty climb, but the restaurant at the base was closed Closed for a wedding. Liberec, with the iconic towered peak of Ještěd topping the ridge in the background I like the handle for the door at the base of the tower On the path Sun sets behind their neighbor's place, and is reflected in a glass of wine. It was a wonderful afternoon and evening. Our hosts grilled steaks and salmon and zucchini and along with some delicious local bread, plates of fresh veggies and cheeses-- we were all feeling fine. Our hosts actually left us to set up our sleeping bags in their little attic and headed back to their apartment in the city— to join us for a quick breakfast before saying our goodbyes. Thanks for stopping by. This is an open thread.
