The ad hoc “Moral Fitness Evaluation Working Group” strongly recommends this checklist be printed out and made available to every child as a practical and useful adjunct to the Ten Commandments posted in their classrooms and on the wall of our Supreme Court. Suggested use is to conduct a pithy and uncompromising interview that simply goes down the checklist and asks if the person being evaluated has ever violated that item in thought, word, and/or deed. There is no statute of limitation. We suggest starting with parents, and also include in the first batch of interviews anyone currently holding public office or running for public office. Since these are non-negotiable precepts, violation of any one of them will disqualify the person from the position or office they are holding or for which they are a candidate. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Name of person being evaluated: _________________________________ Date of evaluation: _______________ [ ] Have you ever put any other gods before the one specified by these commandments? In keeping with the “doctrine of originalism” currently held by the conservatives on the Supreme Court, “god” is strictly restricted to the deity described in the Hebrew Bible’s book of Exodus from which these commandments are drawn. Self-avowed, practicing, Christians do not get a pass here because the central figure in Christianity religion was a Palestinian Jew and there was no Christianity at that time. In fact, worshiping a Jewish rabbi as god is a clear violation of this commandment. [ ] Have you ever served an idol? This includes being a fan of sports figures, political candidates, rock stars, celebrities of every kind, money, power, sex, alcohol, drugs, or anything else. Sucking up to your boss is a clear violation, as is following the orders of military superiors. [ ] Have you ever thought or said “goddammit” or “oh my god” (or texted OMG), just “my god” or even just “oh god”? Have you ever thought or said “jesus fucking christ?” Have you ever sworn an oath on a Bible or uttered the words “so help me god” or “I swear to god” or “god, no”? Also included here as violations are “one nation under god” and “in god we trust” printed on money. [ ] Have you ever worked on the sabbath (includes but is not limited to: laundry, cooking, driving, cleaning, shopping, changing diapers, mowing the lawn, basically anything other than just sitting)? It is likely that everyone automatically fails this one, as there is no agreement on what day the sabbath actually is. The seventh day could be a Saturday depending on what is considered the first day — currently Sunday, but actually Monday is functionally the first day of the week when a lot of people with jobs go back to work. [ ] Have you ever dishonored your father or mother? Have you ever thought anything other than pure, adoring thoughts about your mother or father? Have you always honored and obeyed their instructions or wishes? [ ] “You shall not kill” is unequivocal. Have you ever killed any living thing? This includes, but is not limited to: mosquitoes, bacteria, cows, chickens, deer or other game animals. Did you serve in the military? Have you ever committed, or thought about, murdering another person, or wishing they were dead? Have you ever done anything to indirectly contributing to anyone’s death? This includes, but is not limited to: purchasing and using any item produced under unhealthy working conditions, using pesticides or supporting agriculture that uses pesticides, burning fossil fuels in any vehicle or implement or using any other chemicals that contribute to climate destruction, consuming anything that someone else killed, or failing to respond to a crisis in a way that cost someone their life. Have any of your tax dollars gone to supporting weapons of mass destruction, hand grenades, agent orange, or bullets? [ ] “You shall not commit adultery” is unequivocal. Have you ever had sex with someone to whom you were not married (includes, but is not limited to: necking, petting, mutual masturbation, and all forms of sexual intercourse)? Have you engaged in any of these activities with someone before you were married even if you are married to them now? Have you ever had sex with someone you had been married to but are no longer? [ ] “You shall not steal” is also short and to the point. Have you ever stolen anything? Ate grapes from the package before they were weighed? Cheated on your taxes or insurance claims? Overcharged anyone? Not returned to pay for an item for which you were not charged? Borrowed a pen, a pencil, a book, or a tool that you never returned? Allowed your privilege and entitlement to steal health and well-being from all those whom your entitlement has impoverished? [ ] “You shall not bear false witness” is another one with no wiggle room whatsoever. Have you ever lied about anything? Your age? Told a little one to stay out of trouble? Let someone else take the rap for you? Spun a narrative to make yourself look good, or someone else look bad? Failed to own your projected shadow? [ ] “You shall not covet your neighbor’s house; you shall not covet your neighbor’s partner, male or female slave, ox, donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbor.” Have you ever thought, or said, “I wish I had their money?” or “I wish I had that car?” Remember that “I wish I had a car like that” does not get you out of this one. Included here is anything and everything that is not yours.
